There was no better vantage point to observe America’s deadliest war than Culpeper County, Virginia. Strategically located between the Rappahannock and Rapidan Rivers and astride the vital Orange and Alexandria Railroad, the county witnessed the movement of more troops than any locale in America. The Culpeper Civil War 150th Committee invites you to join our journey for the next four years as we strive to tell the stories of the county’s diverse civilian population who faced inconceivable privations, and the courage and perseverance of the Union and Confederate soldiers who marched, camped, fought, and died in Culpeper.

| Description: |
The Museum of Culpeper History, 803 S. Main St., Culpeper, VA 22701, will open their new exhibit "War Comes to Culpeper" which highlights the events of 1862 including Culpeper's largest battle, the Battle of Cedar Mountain.
Also included will be a special display on Culpeper native and Confederate scout and spy Frank Stringfellow. Highlights of Stringfellows illustrious and colorful military career include spying behind Union lines at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, setting up a line of communication between Confederate sympathizers in the Washington War Department and Richmond which served the Confederacy well though out the war, raiding a Union Picket post in Alexandria, and becoming a master of disguise. Due to his youthful thinness and creativity, he even dressed as a woman and attended a Union ball. He became an Episcopal minister after the war and died at age 73. It is hoped that several of his descendents will be in Culpeper to unveil the new exhibit which will remain in place throughout the Sesquicentennial. |

| Description: |
The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission and the Library of Virginia are partnering in the Civil War 150 Legacy Project to identify and locate original source materials in Virginia that are related to the Civil War and emancipation. Materials may include letters, memoirs, pension materials, military passes/discharge papers, diaries, hand-drawn maps, and selected memorabilia and other Civil War era manuscripts. Of particular interest to the project are global and pacifist perspectives and the viewpoints of individual African Americans and women. Items must be owned by the individual presenting the materials for digitization.
The Library of Virginia is sending teams of archivists to scan privately-held manuscript material for inclusion on both the Library of Virginia and the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission websites. Our team will be at the Culpeper County Library in the Meeting Room, Saturday, March 10 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to scan and return your privately-held materials. Locate items within your family collections that document the Civil War and the Civil-War era. Items must be owned by the individual presenting the materials for digitization. Materials that are photocopied are subject to United States copyright law and may not be submitted for digitization. For more information about this important project please check the website http://www.virginiacivilwar.org/legacy/.

| Description: |
Join the Chesapeake Volunteer Guard and Confederate Military Forces reenactors on Saturday, August 4 from 11am to 5pm when they portray military life as Salubria, and the neighboring villages of Stevensburg and Germanna, would have experienced the preparation and aftermath of the Battle of Cedar Mountain on August 9, 1862.
Built in 1757, the Georgian manor Salubria is Culpeper County's oldest brick home. While Salubria's owners served in the Confederate army, the buildings and grounds would later act as headquarters for Union generals.
Located 7 miles east of Culpeper, VA on Route 3, the Germanna Highway, Salubria is an unrestored "study property," owned by The Memorial Foundation of the Germanna Colonies, Inc. In 1853, the Grayson family purchased Salubria, and two sons, Robert O. and John Cooke Grayson, answered the call of the Confederacy. Robert joined the 9th Virginia Cavalry in March, 1862, and later served with Mosby's Rangers, Co. D. John Cooke Grayson served as an assistant surgeon, most likely at the Confederate General Hospital in Farmville, VA.
Admission to the living history demonstration is free; donations to support the historic preservation missions of the Germanna Foundation and the Friends of Cedar Mountain Battlefield will be gratefully accepted. Admission to the guided tour of Salubria is $10 for adults, $5 for students. The house and grounds will be open from 11 am - 5 pm. |
